THE HOLY RIDGE IS STEEP AND PERILOUS

This was the first solo exhibition by Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington-based artist Alex Mitcalfe Wilson; an ongoing project consisting of large-scale collage works focusing on imagined forested landscapes.

Conceptually, each collage was an attempt to create a "perfect world," a place of controlled beauty that excludes change and disorder. This cyclical process—where works were constantly built up and torn down by Wilson—was highlighted by constructing the collages live within the gallery space throughout the exhibition's duration, welcoming public viewing and conversation. The opening of THE HOLY RIDGE IS STEEP AND PERILOUS took place on 19 January and featured live bands, including a performance by Wilson himself.
