Newton Gully Screen Society 1
The inaugural event in the Newton Gully Screen Society's Autumn season kicked off with a unique live performance by Jess Haugh; a piece inspired by Gertrude Stein's If You Had Three Husbands that explored relationship dynamics, and was accompanied by live musicians and voices. The evening concluded with a screening of Guy Maddin's film, Careful (1992), a vintage melodrama set in a 19th-century Alpine village where residents must speak and tread lightly to avoid triggering an avalanche.
The Newton Gully Screen Society offered a free film screening series, generally presented fortnightly on Sundays in the gallery space, running from April to June 2008. These screenings continued the experimental film programming established by the Cinema Obscura events curated by Sean Monro throughout 2007, maintaining a focus on obscure and challenging cinematic experiences outside the mainstream.
