Newton Gully Screen Society 3
The Newton Gully Screen Society's third film evening focused on the fantasy genre, featuring a double bill of animated films. The screening included Hayao Miyazaki’s classic, My Neighbor Totoro (1988), which tells the story of two young sisters who discover friendly forest spirits in their new rural home, and was followed by Anthony Lucas’s animated short, The Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello (2005), a blend of Gothic horror and steampunk aesthetics featuring dirigibles, a Victorian city and a tragic hero.
The Newton Gully Screen Society offered a free film screening series, generally presented fortnightly on Sundays in the gallery space, running from April to June 2008. These screenings continued the experimental film programming established by the Cinema Obscura events curated by Sean Monro throughout 2007, maintaining a focus on obscure and challenging cinematic experiences outside the mainstream.
