Newton Gully Screen Society at The Wine Cellar 1

The Newton Gully Screen Society launched its Spring season with a screening of Tod Browning's classic avant-garde horror, Freaks (1932). This film, inspired by Browning's time with a travelling circus, famously cast real “freaks,” pushing it beyond horror into a startling and moving documentary of its era. A documentary about the film was also screened for the audience.

For its 2008 Spring season, the Newton Gully Screen Society offered a series of six free film screenings, presented every second Wednesday in the back room of The Wine Cellar, off Karangahape Rd. Organised in collaboration with The Dust Palace, this season continued the Society's mission to bring a range of cinematic experiences to the public, building on the earlier Cinema Obscura events held at Cross St Studios, curated by Sean Monro.
